Resting in Khartoum

Rest day in Khartoum was very restful.  After getting up late in the morning, a couple of us went around the Arabic Market to walk around.  This is not like another touristy markets in the world.  There are no tourists here, so everything is for the locals.  Anything and everything you want can be discovered here, at a very attractive price.  People in Khartoum seemed to be always on the move, no one loiters around, very purposeful people.  Len bought a bunch of stuff, including a nifty gadget that can charge any battery for cell phones and cameras.  It's like a big clip that attaches to the battery.  All that for less than US$3.  In the late afternoon, I went to the Burj al-Fateh Hotel, a 5 star Libyan hotel.  The top floor offered a panoramic view of the city and the confluence of the White Nile and Blue Nile.  I've also heard that there might be some unrest in Khartoum as well.  We have not seen anything.  We are heading out tomorrow, so hopefully everything will be OK.

I forgot to mention in my last post that during our ride into Khartoum, several Sudanese riders joined our convoy.  One of the guys was from Darfur region.  He was lucky enough to get out of there to go to school in Khartoum.  His family is still in Darfur, however.

The Blue Nile and the White Nile joins together and flow up north to Egypt.

  2. DeNile is not the only river in Africa. Now I found out there's a White Nile and Blue Nile! Who would have guessed?
